Adventures in Podcasting
Issue #7: I listened to a lot of podcasts this week and I'm still tweaking the format of this thing.
Hello readers and happy post Valentine’s Day! Thanks for sticking with me and checking out another edition of this little newsletter.
Mostly a typical week for me. Work was a little chaotic this week. I work in an industry where Valentine’s Day is a really big deal so it stands to reason that this would have been a busy week for me. However, it wasn’t nearly as stressful as I would have predicted. Aside from that, it was a pretty mundane week. We got the final episode of the Book of Boba Fett so we won’t be seeing any more Star Wars content until May when the Kenobi series starts up.
Since I got caught up on all of my Star Wars comics reading, I decided to try and start getting caught up with some Star Wars novels. I’ll go more into detail on all of that a little later but just letting you know that I’ve started doing some more reading which I’m sorely behind on.
It was a fairly slow week in wrestling. I watched AEW Dynamite and Rampage of course but, once again, didn’t get around to catching Dark or Elevation. I’m still (for lack of a better term) high on the debut of a Mr. Keith Lee on Dynamite. I’m really looking forward to watching more of him and I hope they don’t drop the ball on him the way that other promotion did. I don’t anticipate they will though. I think that AEW, although it does have a few flaws, benefits from learning from the mistakes that the other promotion makes. Also, I started watching Impact Wrestling again though. The latest episode was probably one of the better episodes of the show that I’ve seen in a long time. The promotion is gearing up for their No Surrender event where most of their championships will be on the line. I didn’t watch any New Japan Pro Wrestling this week. For the most part, I’m probably going to keep to just watching their marquee events and listening to podcast to keep caught up on what’s going on in New Japan. Despite the fact that I didn’t watch a whole lot of wrestling this week, there was a pretty big announcement that kind of shook some of the wrestling community. Cody Rhodes and AEW CEO Tony Khan announced that Cody was leaving the company. A company that he helped build. Weird huh?
I don’t have any video game updates this week because I’m still playing Cyberpunk 2077. There was an update to the game that was released a couple of days ago but I haven’t gotten around to checking those out because I’ve spent the last couple of evenings recording podcasts.
Besides everything else going on, I spent a lot of this week listening to podcasts. A lot. You will see what I mean next.
Rogue One Radio
On this week’s episode of Rogue One Radio, we were joined by one of the co-hosts of the podcast From A Certain Point of View. On this episode, we closed out our series on The Book of Boba Fett by diving into the final episode. We talked about what we liked about the episode, what we did not like about the episode, and discussed our overall thoughts about the series in general. We also answered some questions from the podcast’s Twitter followers about the series and revealed the winner of a giveaway that we had announced on the Star Wars Podcast Day special from a few weeks back. You can listen to the episode on Apple here:
Next week, we will have a special guest on the show to talk about disabilities in Hollywood, comics, and science fiction. The week after that we will have another guest on the show to talk about the Rebels Remembered event. Past that, although not completely nailed down yet, we will be doing an episode about Disney’s “Bronze Age,” that is, the time between 1970 and 1988 (aka, the post-Walt era).
Around the Ring
This week on Around the Ring, Justin and I talked about the surprising debut of “Limitless” Keith Lee on AEW Dynamite. We also talked about what was going on in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Impact Wrestling, All Elite Wrestling, and the Warrior Wrestling 19 event. The top 5 list returned on this episode with their favorite championship belts. You can check out the episode on Apple here:
Here is a list of some of the podcasts that I listened to this week:
Pizza and Parsecs #54 - P&P is a Red5 network podcast where hosts Dave and Liz geek out over things like Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and more. On episode #54, they review The Book of Boba Fett chapters 4-6.
All Things Elite #140 - All Things Elite is a wrestling podcast that focuses on the All Elite Wrestling promotion. On this episode, hosts Floyd and Austin discuss the debut of Keith Lee and appearance of Jay White on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. They also talked about the match between MJF and CM Punk from the previous week.
Punk Lotto Pod: Smoke Em If You Got Em - On this episode of PLP, they talk about the debut album from Reverend Horton Heat.
Punk Lotto Pod: New Release Friday 2/11/22 - New Release Friday is a weekly patron-only podcast that Justin does to showcase a few new releases that he recommends.
One Band 5 Songs: Anthrax - On this episode, Dave talks about the New York thrash metal band.
Bandsplain: Jawbreaker - Bandsplain is a podcast where host Yasi covers the career of a specific band via interviews and music. On this episode, Yasi talks with Leor Galil about the New York-based pop-punk/emo band.
Star Wars Splash Page #274 and #275 - I listened to 2 episode’s of SW Splash Page this week. On #274, they talk about the week in Star Wars comics. On #275, due to the lack of Star Wars comic releases this week, they talked about some upcoming omnibus collections and some new High Republic comics that are coming out later this year.
Cantina Cast #402 - This week, Jonesy and Albert talk about the series finale of The Book of Boba Fett.
Hello There: Rise of the Old Masters - Hello There is a Star Wars podcast hosted by Sara Thompson that focuses on the animated Star Wars universe. On this episode, she covers the fifth episode of season one of Star Wars Rebels.
Curiosity Killed the Cat: Filoni Fest - Curiosity Killed the Cat is another podcast hosted by Hello There host Sara Thompson (aka Sara Skywalker). This one is a more general pop culture podcast that covers movies, tv, books, and more. On this episode, she reviews chapter 6 of The Book of Boba Fett.
Scarif Scuttlebutt: BOBF Review Chapter 7 - The Scarif Scuttlebutt Podcast is another podcast from the Red5 network that is hosted by Ro, Brad, and Chantal. They talk a lot of Star Wars stuff but not exclusive to Star Wars. This episode was their review of the season finale of The Book of Boba Fett.
None of the Star Wars comic books that I subscribe to have any releases this week so there is actually nothing new in my pull list. However, I did find a few things that have been released recently that I had not yet come across.
First was the Nocterra Special: Blacktop Bill. Nocterra is a really great post-apocalyptic series written by Scott Snyder. It went on hiatus for a while but is now up and running again. This special was released on January 5 and tells the story of one of the main antagonists in the series.
Next is Nocterra #7. The series started back up with this issue on February 2nd. If you have never read this series, you’re really missing something. As I mentioned previously, this is in the post-apocalyptic genre that tells the story of a world where the world has been plunged into darkness and dark “zombies” of every imaginable species roam the land infecting everyone. You can check out the first six issues in a collection edition.
Another great series that is currently on hiatus is Geiger. Strangely enough, it is another post-apocalyptic tale written by Geoff Johns. However, even though the main series is still on hiatus, as far as I can tell, the team released a Geiger 80 Page Giant #1 on February 2nd. This one is a collection of stories told by various writers including the creator Johns himself.
In addition to comic books, I have been reading a couple of actual books as well. In addition to the bounty hunter book that I mentioned in the last issue (which I still haven’t finished), I am also reading a couple of other Star Wars novels as I mentioned earlier.
The first one is the book Thrawn Alliances, written by Timothy Zahn. This is the second of the first Thrawn trilogy (first of the “new” canon that is) and is the follow up to simply titled Thrawn. The second, which I’m actually finished with, is The Force Collector, written by Kevin Shinick. This one is set after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows a teenager on a personal journey to discover the myth of the Jedi. Kind of an interesting look into the Star Wars galaxy from a non-marquee character’s perspective.
You can follow my progress of these books, and once I’m done read any reviews that I have written about them, on my Goodreads profile.
This week’s track is “Miranda” by Frank Turner. “Miranda” comes from Frank’s latest album FTHC (Frank Turner Hard Core) which was released February 11, 2022 via Xtra Mile Recordings. The song is an autobiographical tale about his past and previous relationship with his father, who transitioned to a trans woman in 2015. The lyrics of course tell an interesting story and something I think a lot of people can relate to in a lot of ways but the music is also very pleasing to the ear. I’m a big fan of Turner but I will admit that his albums can be hit or miss, at least for me. This new album is really good but for some reason this is the track I keep gravitating toward. You can listen to it on Spotify below:
