Happy Friday readers!
The topic for the week is cargo shorts. I like them. They are what I wear about 99% of the time. I’m not a fan of jeans (or long pants in general). I like for my legs to feel free. A friend of mine on social media referred to them as the purse for men. They are definitely great for if you need to carry a bunch of stuff I don’t even really carry all that much stuff with me. I have my keys, my phone, a pocket knife, and sometime a pen or (when I go to the game store to play a game) some dice. When I was playing guitar in bands I used to carry a bunch of picks and song notes in them. I don’t even remember how I “discovered” cargo shorts. Or cargo pants for that matter but I know that is where it started. I think part of why I gravitated toward cargo pants was a hold over from when I was in the military and wore BDUs all the time. I got used to having that loose feeling as far as pants go. By the way, BDU is short for battle dress uniforms. Other might call them fatigues although I’m not sure where that name came from. Go look it up and you’ll see what I’m talking about. But once I discovered cargo shorts instead of cargo pants I never really went back. Anyway, yeah, I like cargo shorts. That was all.
On another note, I recently came across another Substack newsletter called GenXcellent and they (Liz) wrote an article about shopping malls.
In the area where I currently live, there used to be 6 malls in the metro area at one time. Now it is down to 3 and one of those I wouldn’t even count because there are so few stores left in it. I guess we can still count it since there are stores in it and there is (kind of) a food court in it. Of the 3 that are no longer shopping malls, 1 of them is nothing but state government offices. There used to be some call centers located in that one too. In fact, I used to work at 2 of them (at different times). Those call centers are no longer there. Of the other 2, one of them I think is hosting a charter school but doesn’t have anything else in it and the other has a mega church located at one end of it and nothing else is there. Of the 3 that are still shopping malls, one of them I don’t really bother going to anymore (that is the one that doesn’t have much left in it) and the other 2 I don’t really go to very often because they are too far of a drive for me to just go to the mall. Come to think of it, I’m not even sure that I like shopping malls anymore. I used to. Like Liz (from the aforementioned Substack), I used to hang out in malls all the time. It was the thing to do. But now, I guess I just don’t like to be around that many people all at once. Unless I’m at a concert and then it doesn’t bother me. The only reason I really go to any of the malls anymore is if I just happen to be going to them to watch a movie (they both have AMC Theaters in them).
I finished reading Thrawn Ascendency: Chaos Rising. The audiobook I’m listening to now is the Legends/EU novel Revan by Drew Karpyshyn. I’m not sure why I’m just now getting around to reading this. I like the character and I liked Drew’s Darth Bane series. I’m about halfway through it already.
This week, my comic book pull list consisted of…
Last night there was another Pioneer Library hosted comic book discussion night at Speeding Bullet! We covered X-Men: Days of Future Past. It was a good discussion. All of the participants were engaged in the conversation. Some liked the book and some didn’t but, unlike a large portion of social media, we were respectful of our differences of opinion. I always enjoy these comic book discussions. Even when it is about a book that I don’t particularly care about.
I read a couple of X-Men trades from the Ed Brubaker run of X-Men. I like pretty much everything I have read of Brubaker’s. I started with Deadly Genesis. It was okay. Not really his greatest work. Then I read The Extremists. I should have started with The Rise of Fall of the Shi’ar Empire because that is the start of his “main” run but I am not really a huge fan of X-Men in space so I think I’ll probably skip that one. I think I’m going to read the sequels to Messiah Complex next but what other X-Men runs do you think I should read that you think I might not have read yet?
Not a huge week for new music releases. Well, not many that I found all that interesting anyway. Here are the albums that were released this week and piqued my interest:
GEL - Persona
Ultraman - Dead End Thoughts Under A Crawling Sky
Hedge - Better Days
I didn’t watch anything in the theaters this week. I am planning to go check out the new Alien movie this weekend though. As far as my TV watching goes, I am still watching Community. I’m almost done with that. I’m in the last season. No idea what I’m going to start watching once that is over with.
On Rebel Rock Radio this week, we talked about the origins of the Jedi. We played tunes from Arizona Law, Hasty, and Hedge.
This week’s track of the week is a new single from from Scrunchies that was released today. Enjoy!
That is it for this week kids. Have a great weekend.
1) The kitty is a cutie! ❤️
2) Cargo shorts ARE purses for men— I never thought of them that way before! No wonder they’re so beloved
3) Thanks for spotlighting my post on malls! Yeah so many of them are being rented now as offices, churches, etc and it reminds me of that meme suggesting abandoned malls be turned into Gen X retirement centers 😆
