Issue #6: Formatting Blues
Hello readers! Thanks for taking the time out to check out another edition of the Otter Limits newsletter. Not much has been going on this week outside of the normal routine. I worked, watched The Book of Boba Fett (another great episode), played some video games (see below), read a little (also see below), watched some wrestling, goofed around on Twitter. That was really about it.
I’m still trying to figure out how the format of these newsletters are going to go so I really appreciate you bearing with me as I figure it out.
Video Games
As I mentioned in last week’s issue, I got the new Xbox for my birthday. The Series X that is. Prior to this, I have been a Playstation user for quite some time. I decided to make the switch recently and went with the new Xbox. I won’t get into the reasons for why I switched here. Maybe in another installment. The reasons mostly only make sense to myself. In any case, as soon as I got it all hooked up I wound up installing a few of the Fallout games (I am a big fan of the Fallout series by the way) and started playing Fallout 3 (mostly because it was the first game that finished installing). After playing that game for a while, I decided that since I got a new system, why not start playing games I’ve never played before? So I did that.
First, I started playing a zombie killing game called Dying Light. The sequel was just recently released and I had been hearing a lot about it. It had been a long time since I played a good zombie killing game so I went out on a few of the Facebook groups and Discord servers I goof around on from time to time to get some suggestions and the consensus seemed to be Dying Light. I like it. It takes place in a fictional town in the Middle East that has been affected by a virus that created zombies and it is your job to find a cure. Good game that I played a bit until….
I was talking to a friend of mine that I used to be in the Air Force with. Yeah, I was in the Air Force. I really should do a quick bio of myself on one of these newsletters one of these days to tell you about my history. Anyway, this friend also has an Xbox so we were talking games that he liked so I could get some more ideas and he mentioned Cyberpunk 2077. Now, this one was a game that I had planned on buying. I was really excited to play it when I heard about it because I was a big fan of the 90s era Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game. However, the release date kept getting pushed back and then once it came out, I had heard of all of the glitches so I decided to wait. Anyway, my friend told me that the glitches were pretty much non-existent now so I decided to buy it and try it out. I’m really glad I did. I really like this game. So much so that I wound up buying the player’s guide. Anyway, that is pretty much all I have been playing now whenever I set aside some time for video games.
Currently Reading
Other than comic books, here is what I am currently reading:
The Bounty Hunter Code Book is a Star Wars book (big surprise) that is part of a short series of books called the Chronicle Books. Also included in this series are Book of Sith and The Jedi Path. They were all written by Daniel Wallace. I have read Book of Sith. I borrowed it from the library a long time ago. So far, it is a fun read like Book of Sith was. I have not finished this one yet. It’s not a long book but I just haven’t been setting aside a lot of time to read lately. I really should. In fact, I’m planning on trying to get caught up on the High Republic novels as soon as I finish this one. I’ll keep you up to date on my progress with those.
PODCAST UPDATES
Rogue One Radio
This week, there were 2 episodes of Rogue One Radio.
First, we recorded a special episode to celebrate Star Wars Podcast Day. Star Wars Podcast Day is an annual celebration of the release of the first Star Wars Podcast, which was released on February 7, 1999. This episode was released (obviously) on Monday, February 7th via our YouTube channel and all of the usual podcast platforms that this podcast appears on.
Also, our regularly scheduled live episode aired on YouTube on Tuesday evening. On this episode, regular co-host DJ was out of pocket so Nicole and I were joined by Jonesy from the Star Wars podcast The Cantina Cast. The Cantina Cast is one of the first Star Wars podcast I started listening to on a regular basis many years ago and got to meet the hosts (Jonesy and Albert) at Star Wars Celebration when it was in Chicago in 2019. Anyway, it was fun to get to interact with Jonesy on the show. We talked about chapter 6 of the Disney Plus show The Book of Boba Fett. On the show we also revealed the results of the newest listener poll where we asked the question: Who is your favorite character from the show Star Wars Rebels? Additionally, we played a tune from Connecticut-based punk band American Thrills. You can watch the episode on YouTube here:
Around the Ring
This week on Around the Ring, Justin and I talked about the Major League Wrestling (MLW) show Azteca. We also did, as always, did a recap of the AEW Dynamite and Rampage shows. We specifically talked in detail about the long awaited match between CM Punk and MJF. In addition to that, during their coverage of some weekly professional wrestling headlines, they kind of got off on a tangent about the Impact Wrestling promotion. Podcast Shout Outs
Star Wars Splash Page is a weekly podcast that is focused on Star Wars comics. If you like Star Wars comics books, or just want to learn more about them, this is the place for you.
The aforementioned Cantina Cast was, as I mentioned earlier, one of the first Star Wars focused podcasts that I listened to.
THE PULL LIST (This week’s comics haul)
First up was the 20th issue of Darth Vader. Keep in mind that this is issue #20 of the current run. There have been 3 runs of Darth Vader from Marvel Comics. Well, 3 that I know of with the title just being Darth Vader….and that I have read. First was the run that started in 2015 and was written by Kieron Gillen. That one ran until 2016. The second was the Charles Soule run that went from 2017 to 2018. And this one, written by Greg Pak, that started in 2020.
The other title that I got this week was Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy #1. It is the first issue of a 5 part miniseries. Technically, this should not be on this week’s pull list because it was actually released last Wednesday. However, I did not know about it until after having listened to the aforementioned Star Wars comic book podcast so I included it anyway.
TRACK OF THE WEEK
This week’s track of the week is “Funeral” by Los Angeles-based quintet Spanish Love Songs. It was their contribution to a compilation called Sea Shepherd Benefit Vol 3 which was released in March 2019. As far as I have been able to tell, this is the only album that the song was released on. The song is kind of gloomy. It is told from the perspective of a guy that is, as the opening line states, “singing at a funeral tomorrow for a kid a year older than me.” Despite it’s morose overtone, it is still a pretty good song. The first time I heard this was through some random playlist that Spotify created for me based, I’m assuming, on my liking of their material in general. I enjoy the band and I enjoy this song.
