Egg Salad and Punk Rock
Issue #91: I don't have any ideas for a sub-title. Come up with your own.
Happy Friday readers! Hope you are having a great week.
Do you remember your first time?
…………..
First time eating egg salad that is. I do. I was living in Alaska. I was in Alaska because I was in the military at the time and that is where I was stationed. I worked on the flight line which was very far removed from the regular part of the base. We usually brought our own food to work because it was too much of a pain in the ass to leave for lunch and go to the other side of the base to eat (the other side of the base is where the dining facility was located). However, every once in a while, the dining facility would send a sort of little cafe out to our part of the base. They only did this a couple of times a week. Anyway, one time when they came out and they had egg salad. Prior to this, I had never eaten egg salad because I thought it looked disgusting. I’m not sure why I thought that in retrospect but I did. But one this day, I was extremely hungry and had not brought any food with me that day and it had been a long day at work already. So I was like okay, let me have an egg salad sandwich. When you’re hungry, sometimes you will eat just about anything, no matter how bad it looks. So I got my egg salad sandwich and went to our little eating area there on the flight line and dug in. Holy cow! My life was forever changed. That egg salad was fantastic! To this day, I absolutely love egg salad. I don’t eat it very often. It is kind of time consuming to make and most sandwich places that I frequent don’t carry that as a sandwich option. There was one place that had them so I went there pretty often. Until one day…… I guess ownership had changed at this place and they started making things differently. I walked in, ordered my egg salad sandwich and went to find a table. They called out my order and I unwrapped my sandwich to partake in the deliciousness of their egg salad sandwich. Then I bit into it. What the hell? They baked it! Not just the bread. The egg salad too. It was gross. I was unhappy. I ate it but it was not good. Who baked egg salad?!? The next time I went into this shop, I asked them not to bake it and they looked at me like I was an idiot and then tried to argue with me about it because this was the way they made sandwiches. That is where the ownership change comes into play. They didn’t use to bake their sandwiches. Why now? So I stopped going to that sandwich place. Interesting epilogue to that story is that sandwich shop is no longer in business. Serves them right for BAKING AN EGG SALAD SANDWICH!!!
Anyway, I really love egg salad.
Our main topic on Rebel Rock Radio this week was season 3 of The Bad Batch. We also spent some time celebrating the birthday of and reminiscing about the legacy of Mr. George Lucas and played tunes from Left Circles, Faulty Cognitions, and Coruscants.
Sunday evening, I was the guest of a new live stream called Daily Dingus. It is a new series about comic book news that has been started up by Spencer of The Dingus Den. We talked about a bunch of comic book related news and what we’ve been reading lately.
Last night, I recorded a new episode of my punk rock podcast Pure Rank. I had been putting it off for a while. I had not realized that the last episode I did was in February. Jeez! Anyway, on this episode, my friend Dave of One Band 5 Songs joined me and we talked about our favorite ALL records. It is available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and some other places. You can see all of our links at bio.link/purerankpodcast.
Here are some of the new releases that came out today:
Stress Dolls - Queen of No
Sludgeworth - Together Not Together (this was only a 2 song single)
The Anti-Queens - Disenchanted
Ahem - Avoider
Shellac - To All Trains
Here are the artists that I listened to the most this week according to Last.fm.
This week’s pull list consisted of Ultimate X-Men #3, X-Men Forever #4, and Action Comics #1065.
I read some of the Free Comic Book Day comics that I hadn’t gotten around to reading yet. I also read the first 2 issues of a new Star Wars limited series about Jango Fett and read some X-Men comics that I had not gotten around to reading (specifically Resurrection of Magneto #1 and Dead X-Men #1). I also read the Ultimate Invasion trade (technically, I read the single issues that the trade paperback was comprised of).
The Star Wars RPG campaign kicked off again at DM Dave’s this past Monday. It was a blast. It had been on hiatus due to the somewhat lengthy illness of the game master and a couple of Mondays where the weather was really crappy here. I had forgotten how far along into the campaign we were because we concluded it at the game. Thankfully, the GM is ready to start the new campaign already so we will pick that campaign up this Monday.
The only thing I watched in the theater this week was The Fall Guy. It was actually a fun movie. Way better than I thought it would be. I give it an A-.
On streaming however, I watched quite a few movies. I watched the Beatles documentary Let It Be on Disney Plus.
I also watched A Quiet Place and the sequel A Quiet Place Part 2. I’m not sure why I had never watched either of those. I enjoyed them both. I think I liked the 2nd one better though. There is a third one coming out later this year. It is a prequel. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to go see that when it comes out.
Another film (it was a short film) I watched this week was Chris Claremont’s X-Men on Amazon Prime. It was really good. It is about the legendary and long time writer of the X-Men comic books.
Outside of movies, the wife and I have been trying to get caught up on Young Sheldon.
This week, I’m not featuring a track of the week. I am instead featuring an album that was released today. Last week, punk pioneer Steve Albini passed away. I wrote about that last week if you were paying attention. His band Shellac released an album today. I understand that Shellac is not everybody’s cup of tea but I’m a fan of the band and I’m really enjoying this new, final piece of music that we are getting from the legendary Chicago based musician/producer/engineer. Rest in Peace Steve!
That’s it for this week kids. Have a great weekend and remember to BE MORE KIND!
Man, I love The Lawrence Arms. They're on my most played list most weeks.
