Hello loyal readers! And for those of you new to this newsletter, I apologize.
Here’s a picture of Leia sleeping for you.
I thought I might have something to say this week but, alas, I don’t have much.
In last week’s issue I mentioned that I was thinking of picking up bass playing again so that is happening. I actually didn’t have a bass amp because I had gotten rid of all of my bass amps prior to our move to Michigan last year. I started looking for a decent, inexpensive bass amp to goof around on and a funny thing happened. I was talking to a friend of mine about the potential of my playing bass again and he wound up buying me a bass amp. Good guy. I used to play in a band with him when I was living in Alaska. So I’ve been goofing around on the bass and, as I said last week, trying to knock the rust off and that seems to be going okay. I haven’t found a band to play with yet but I have a few options that I’ve been thinking over. I’ll keep you up to date on all of that. For now, here is the usual goofy stuff that you’ll find here.
DJ did another solo episode of Rebel Rock Radio while I continue my podcasting sabbatical. This time around, he continued the Are They Real series and talked about vampires in pop culture. Vampires in books. Vampires in TV. Vampires in movies. He also played tunes from Perfume USA, Leopard Print Taser, and Danny the K.
I recently discovered a podcast called Let’s Play Ten. It is a podcast where the hosts, MP and Ben, pick 5 songs each from 5 DIY/independent artists and they talk about them. It’s definitely worth a listen if you are into music in the indie/punk/power pop veins. Check out the newest episode (which is actually a super sized episode) on Spotify below:
A couple of weeks ago, I saw Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. I went into it with low expectations because of all that negative stuff I read about it on social media. I really should know better than that though. In this instance, I don’t get the hate. I enjoyed the film. I mean, I still think the title was stupid but the movie itself was fun. Word to the wise: don’t let social media contribute to your decision on whether or not to watch something. If you want to watch it, then watch it and made your own judgement call.
This past weekend, I saw Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It was fun. There is a scene at the end of the movie that might be giving a hint as to what the next Transformers movie might be and, if so, I am pretty excited about it.
I’m also still working my way through that timeline order of the MCU films. The last one I watched was Endgame (2019).
To nobody’s surprise, I am still working on that history of New Japan Pro Wrestling book (Lion’s Pride). Don’t hold your breath. If I have to ACTUALLY read something and it’s not a comic book, chances are I will not be finishing it any time soon. I had started reading through the Immortal Hulk run and although I do plan to return to that read, I read volume 1 of the Jason Aaron run of The Avengers.
I also grabbed a few trade paperbacks at the library over the weekend that I’m hoping to finish up by the end of the week (no promises though). I picked up Flash: Year One by Joshua Williamson, Captain America by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Falcon & Winter Soldier: Cut Off One Head by Derek Landy, Daredevil: Woman Without Fear by Chip Zdarsky.
Additionally, I started listening to the audio book of Sellout: The Major Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo, and Hardcore by Dan Ozzi.
Here is the pull list for this week:
Days of Future Past: Doomsday #1
Immortal X-Men #13
Darth Vader #36
X-Force #42
I decided to include another list this week. This week, I’m tackling my top 5 favorite punk rock bass players. Listed alphabetically, they are:
Karl Alvarez (Descendents, ALL)
Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag)
Klaus Flouride (Dead Kennedys)
Matt Freeman (Operation Ivy, Rancid)
Darryl Jenifer (Bad Brains)
This week’s track is a song that I heard on the aforementioned Let’s Play Ten podcast. Enjoy!
