Hi readers. Another week has come and gone. And for me, another year has come and gone. To reference the title of this week’s newsletter, I have leveled up again. Birthdays used to be something to look forward to. At my age, not so much. But it’s here. Another level up. Might as well get used to it.
So last Friday, the 3 of us (wife, youngest kid, and myself) drove up to Tulsa (about 2 hours away) to watch a hockey game. Why do you ask? Well, the Oklahoma City metro area does not have a hockey team and it has been a long time since I’ve seen a hockey game. However, this was not just some random hockey game that we decided to go check out. I’ve never seen the Tulsa team. They are called the Oilers by the way. So the reason that I chose this specific game is because my friends from Sisterhood of the Travelin Bantha mentioned that the team was hosting a Star Wars night and their costuming group (mostly the 501st I think) was going to be there. I have never actually met this group in person so I figured since we didn’t have anything else to do, it would be cool to go up there and meet them. So we did. It was really cool to finally meet these folks. They are a great bunch. I don’t have much to say about the game. We left early. The Tulsa team was down 4-1 when we left. Anyway, the picture above is a picture that was taken of a few of the people I went up there to meet. The hockey game was meh but meeting those people was great.
PODCAST STUFF
On Rebel Rock Radio, we talked about everything from hockey and soccer to coffee and beer. Side conversations with ourselves were abundant but we did get to talk about our main topic which was a retrospective of The Bad Batch Season One. And we played tunes from The Mochines, The Promised End, and The Sleeveens! Check out the replay of the YouTube live stream below or check out our audio platforms at www.rebelrockradio.com!
A new episode of One Band 5 Songs dropped this week. This week, Dave covered the music of Dave Hause. Check it out on Spotify:
Also, I am planning on starting a new music podcast. I’m not sure if I’m going to pull the plug on Radio Unfriendly. The format of this new podcast is based on those top 5 albums of [insert band name here] that I’ve been doing on social media. On this podcast, I will pick a band, talk about them and then talk about my 5 favorite albums of theirs. The name of the podcast will be Pure Rank!
MUSIC STUFF
Here are my top 10 most listened to artists (according to Last.fm) for the month of January:
Those of you that listen to Spotify regularly, have you been noticing these day list things lately? Lists with interesting names that play random songs with some sort of theme to it. Well, kind of a theme. The day lists are kind of silly actually but the names are entertaining. The playlists changes over the course of the day because, usually, first thing in the morning, the theme has the word morning in it somewhere and then somewhere in the course of the day it turns to lunch or afternoon or evening or something like that. This morning’s day list for me was Volatile Atlanta Punk Friday Early Morning. Granted, I did not bother listening to this morning’s day list because today is new release Friday so I’ve been spending that listening to new releases.
READING STUFF
Only one comic book on my pull list this week. It was Doctor Aphra #40.
In comics, I read a 4 issue series that is a prequel to the Skull Island movie. It was called Skull Island: The Birth of Kong. Pretty decent read. If you are not a fan of the franchise I wouldn’t recommend it but if you love the franchise, you should definitely read it. I also started reading the current run of Daredevil by Saladin Ahmed. I’ve only read the first 2 issues and the series is currently at 5 issues so I’m not terribly far behind. Shouldn’t take too long to get caught up. Based on the first 2 issues though, I am interested in it. Speaking of Daredevil, I also read volume 1 of the Ed Brubaker run of Daredevil and started Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith. I am planning to put a pause on my reading of the current run of Amazing Spider-Man to do a deep dive reading of past Daredevil comics.
I’m still working on the audiobook of Dark Disciple. I’m about 3/4 of the way through it.
GAMING STUFF
Nothing really going on here. I didn’t go to the game store this week because I wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t play a whole lot on my console other than a little bit of New Vegas here and there.
FOOD STUFF
Up until recently, I had never eaten at a Zaxbys. There aren’t many of them around here so that is part of it. The other part being I don’t really care about chicken tender places in general. It’s a chicken tender, big deal. But, there is a YouTuber that I watched frequently that refers to them often so I figured we’d try it out. We went there last Saturday and I ordered their regular chicken sandwich. As far as chicken sandwiches go I liked it. I liked it more than the chicken sandwich at Chick-Fil-A and the one at Popeyes. I can’t remember who else has chicken sandwiches other than McDonald’s, Burger King, or Wendys but it was certainly better than those too. Aside from the chicken sandwich itself, I actually really like the fries. They were your standard crinkle cut fries but the way they seasoned them I really enjoyed. So overall, if I’m in the mood for a chicken sandwich, I’ll probably eat at Zaxby’s again.
STUFF I WATCHED
I rewatched season one of The Bad Batch for the purposes of Rebel Rock Radio but other than that, I haven’t been watching any TV. I didn’t go to the theater at all this week but I did rewatch the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home a couple of days ago and last night I (finally) watched the movie 12 Years a Slave.
TRACK OF THE WEEK
Today, I just picked a random track from the new Dead Years album that dropped today. The album is called Night Thoughts. Enjoy!
That’s it for this week. Enjoy your weekend and remember to BE MORE KIND!
