Only March? Ugh!
Issue #132: "There's a strong streak of good in you Superman, but then nobody's perfect.."
Monday again?!? How’s it going readers? 2025. Ugh. Am I right folks?
Unfortunately, February gave us a couple of sad deaths.
First off, there was David Johansen. He is most remembered for his role as singer of The New York Dolls. I can’t say that I was a big fan of their material but one can’t deny their influence on punk rock. He is also known for his time as Buster Poindexter. Outside of The New York Dolls, I remember him most from his role in the 1988 film Scrooged. He died from stage four cancer on February 28th. Rest well Buster.
The other recent death was that of Academy Award winning actor Gene Hackman. Although I have seen him in a ton of projects and have quite a few favorites, he is most well known to me as playing the part of Lex Luthor in the Superman films. His cause of death, as of this writing, has not yet been determined. He was 95. Some of my favorite films of his (aside from the Superman movies) include Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, Unforgiven, The Firm, Wyatt Earp, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, and The Replacements. Rest well Lex.
Here are some good new releases that came out last week.
Seattle, Washington’s indie rock band Deep Sea Diver released Billboard Heart on Sub Pop Records.
Thousand Island Records released Echoes of Tomorrow from Quebec-based melodic punk band Killing Daisies.
Indie rock band Smoked Salmon, another band based out of Australia (this one is from Melbourne) released a self-titled LP.
February is over but I’m going to wait until next week to do my best albums of February 2025 list. However, I will list my most listened to artists (according to Lastfm as usual) in the month of February for you here.
Last week’s comic book pull list consisted of…
Green Lantern #20
Detective Comics #1094
Women of Marvel: She-Devils #1
I also played some catch up on both the current run of Batman and Robin by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and the current run of Batgirl by Tate Brombal.
Here’s some other stuff I read:
BRZRKR Vol. 1 by Keanu Reeves
Avengers: Twilight by Chip Zdarsky
I decided to change the name of this segment to something more interesting. Perhaps I will do the same with the other segments at some point in time.
I didn’t go to the theater anytime last week. There really wasn’t anything out that I wanted to go see.
As far as streaming goes, I started watching the Hulu TV show History of the World Part II. It is a sketch comedy series written by Mel Brooks and is a sequel to his 1981 Part 1 film. If I’m being completely honest, it kind of feels like somebody else trying to make a Mel Brooks thing rather than the man doing it himself. That’s not to say it is bad. It just feels different.
On last week’s Rebel Nerd Radio, we finished up our series on the Lord of the Rings movies with a discussion about The Return of the King.
Sunday, I appeared on another episode of The Comic Den with Spencer. He had another guest on with us and we talked about the 1982 X-Men story God Loves Man Kills. It was a special episode to support Rare Disease Day.
This one popped up on my Spotify release radar. It’s a single by Nashville, Tennessee-based indie artist Soccer Mommy.
That’s all I have for you this week. Enjoy yours.
