How’s it going readers! Ready for a fun filled journey through my short attention span mind? Well here we go!
3 years ago today (August 9) we had to put down our cat Murphy (the cat in the cover photo this week). He had gotten old and had many illnesses and we just couldn’t let him suffer anymore. We had him for a very long time. He was the best kitty. RIP Murphy.
Last weekend I took a trip up to Wichita Kansas to hangout with my Rebel Rock Radio co-host JD. That is about a 3 hour drive. Not a bad drive. I mean, the scenery isn’t great. It’s all flatland. But the drive felt like it went by quick. It is a straight shot up I-35 and most of it is a 75 mph speed limit (so naturally I went a little faster than that). It was a good trip. We had lunch (see below), saw a movie (see below), and had dinner with his girlfriend (also see below) before I drove back home. Between lunch and the movie, we hit up a couple of comic book/hobby shops. I’m planning to go back sometime with the wife and kid to his place (which is about 30 minutes north of Wichita) for a pig roast. Looking forward to that. I think they are going to come down to Norman and hang out as well because his girlfriend is a huge OU fan (wife and I are NOT fans).
New Music Friday
Here are some cool albums that came out today:
Lost In Society - The Distribution of Comfort
Fucked Up - Another Day
Supermilk - High Precision Ghosts
Another good album came out earlier this week but since it wasn’t released on Friday I didn’t include it in that list. The album is a self titled album by Ninth Cage.
This week’s comic book pull list consisted of Uncanny X-Men #1 and Star Wars Inquisitors #2.
I wrote a review of Uncanny X-Men #1 for Future of the Force.
As far as other comic book reading, I have been reading X-Men: Days of Future Past. I should say that I have been re-reading it because I’ve already read this at least a couple of times already. I am re-reading it because of an upcoming comic book discussion that Dave will be hosting at Speeding Bullet Comics this month.
Another thing I wanted to mention regarding comic books are a few of my favorite comics that were released in the month of July. I’m going to try and remember to do something like this every month. Anyway, here are my favorites from July.
Star Wars Inquisitors #1
X-Men #1
X-Force #1
The only thing that I’m reading right now aside from comic books is Thrawn Ascendency: Chaos Rising. I’m listening to the audiobook and I’ve been taking it kind of slow. No particular reason. Just not trying to rush through it.
Usually I post this segment at the top of the newsletter but I wanted to try moving things around a bit this week and see how it plays out….
This week on Rebel Rock Radio we started our Spirit of Star Wars series with the first installment: What is the Force? We also spent some time talking about toy collecting and french fries. The tunes we played on this week’s episode were from The Brash Menagerie, Matty Grace, and Computer Girl. Next week, our topic will be Who are the Jedi?
Also this week we recorded some bonus content for our patrons. We shared our thoughts about the movie Deadpool and Wolverine. If you aren’t already a subscriber to our patreon, you should! It’s only $2 a month and you get the bonus content, you get a sticker when you initially sign up, and you get a shout out on our live streams! Come join us!
On a new episode of One Band 5 Songs, Dave talked about Vancouver Canada based duo Japandroids.
Punk Lotto Pod put out a great episode this week that covered the 1996 Descendents album Everything Sucks.
I have a lot of food stuff to talk about this week. Mostly due to the aforementioned trip up to Wichita but I also visited a couple of places we had never been to here in Norman.
First up, JD and I had lunch at an Irish sandwich bar called Artichoke. I had a reuben that I had them put on an onion hoagie instead of rye bread. Mostly because I really wanted to try out the onion hoagie. The sandwich was delicious and had just the right amount of sauerkraut and dressing. They didn’t skim on either and they didn’t go overboard. I had mine sandwich with a side of cole slaw (I really like cole slaw) and JD had his sandwich (I forgot what he ordered) with side of potato salad. I think if I go back to this place when I’m in town again I will try out the potato salad. Not because I didn’t like my cole slaw (because I did) but because the potato salad looked really good.
For dinner after the movie we hit up a pizza place called Oak & Pie. This place had more than just pizza. JD had some pizza. For some strange reason I wasn’t in the mood for pizza so I wound up ordering some chicken alfredo which was good. His girlfriend ordered salmon alfredo which also looked really good.
Sunday at lunch time, the wife and kid and I all went to a place called Roosters Bar & Grill. This is a place that I always seem to pass by when I’m in that area (usually when I’m going to DM Daves) but I never stop in. I decided it was time to try it. I had a philly cheese steak which I thought was pretty good. It came with a side of fries that were actually good. I won’t get into my thoughts about french fries here because if you’ve read this newsletter before, you probably already know my thoughts about french fries in general. I’m sure I’ve talked about them before. Anyway, it was a nice little place. Not too busy, especially for a Sunday at lunch time. I’m sure that I’ll go back.
Earlier this week, the wife and I had an impromptu date night. Mostly because we had a hankering for chicken fried steak. I found this place called The Land Run Grill here in Norman that, according to the reviews, had really good chicken fried steak. It was good. Probably not the best chicken fried steak I’ve had before but still good. The portion was large. The mashed potatoes were actual potatoes (which, strangely, you don’t find all of the time in restaurants much anymore). And while the chicken fried steak and the mashed potatoes were good, I think my favorite part of the meal was the appetizer of southwest egg rolls that we ordered.
Here are the movies that I watched this week.
Deadpool and Wolverine - I saw this one for the 2nd time while I was up in Wichita visiting JD and again on Wednesday evening with my youngest. I absolutely love this movie.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F - This one is a Netflix exclusive release. It was fine. Not as good as the first one but it’s worth a watch if you are interested in the character. A really good thing about this movie is that it has Kevin Bacon in it so it gives us all another connection for the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon game.
This week I finished the sitcom Brooklyn Nine Nine (probably one of my top 10 favorite TV shows now) and I wound up starting (and finishing) season two of the Amazon Prime tv show Reacher. After looking around for a while for something else fun to watch, I wound up continuing the sitcom Community which I had started watching a long time ago but didn’t get very far into it before I moved on to something else.
For the track of the week, here is my most listened to track of the week. It comes from the album A Paradoxical Theory of Change by MakeWar.
That’s it for this week kids. Have a great weekend.
