Star Wars Month, Wanderlust, and Getting Old
Issue #92: "Most other nations don’t allow a terrorist to be their leader. Yet so many allow their leaders to be terrorists."
Happy Friday readers! Another week has come and gone and can you believe we are already to the end of May!!! Good grief this month has flown by!
If you don’t already know this, May is a huge month for us Star Wars fans. First, there is May the 4th which has unofficially become Star Wars Day and there are always several events going on across the world on this day.
Another reason why May is so important to Star Wars is, that up until the Disney acquisition, all of the films were released in the month of May.
The Phantom Menace - May 19, 1999
Attack of the Clones - May 16, 2002
Revenge of the Sith - May 19, 2005
A New Hope - May 25, 1977 (May 25 is another huge celebration day for Star Wars fans)
The Empire Strikes Back - May 21, 1980
Return of the Jedi - May 25, 1983
After Disney acquired the franchise, the only movie to be released in May was Solo: A Star Wars Story. For some reason, Disney chose to have most of their movies released in December. I’m not sure why they’ve done this. In any case, between May 4th and May 25th, Star Wars is really unofficially Star Wars month.
I also wanted to discuss the idea of wanderlust. I can’t remember why I got the idea to talk about this. I think I came across the word on a social media post at some point this week. If you are not familiar with the term, a person with wanderlust is somebody that has a strong impulse toward traveling, or wandering around. A nomadic type person. I’ve always seen myself in this light. I don’t really like to stay in one place. Up until about 2010 I have spent my entire life moving around or bouncing around the globe. Unless you count, the 6-7 months that I spent living in Michigan, I have lived in Oklahoma for 14 years which is the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. To be completely honest, I’m ready to move somewhere else. To me, the only good thing about living in Oklahoma is that it is so cheap to live here. Thankfully (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) I’m married to someone that absolutely loves it here and has kept me grounded. But yeah, I definitely have wanderlust. I think a lot of has to do with the fact that I have been moving around all of my life due to the military. I grew up in a military family so we moved around quite a bit. After high school, I went to college for a couple of years but then joined the military myself and wound up moving around quite a bit. In my life, outside of the United States, I have lived in 3 countries and have travelled to seven (7) different countries. Eight (8) if you count the fact that I briefly visited East Germany when there still was an East Germany when I was young. As far as the United States goes, not counting Oklahoma, I have lived in 9 different states and travelled to….uhm…a lot of them. My point being, I have travelled around quite a bit. So yeah, wanderlust. It’s a thing. Do you have it?
So I’m sure there are plenty of you out there that feel like they are getting old. Do you want to know what will REALLY make you feel old? When your youngest child is graduating high school. The baby is graduating high school tonight (Friday, May 24th). You’d think that having a grandchild would make you feel old. Well, that does. Not going to lie. But when your youngest child is finishing up high school. That’s a rough one. I still remember taking them to kindergarten their first day. In fact, just a few days ago, a Facebook memory popped up with me talking about taking them to go enroll in kindergarten. Good grief!
On Rebel Rock Radio this week we were supposed to talk about The Book of Boba Fett but due to bad weather in JD’s area and the fact that he had to work some very long shifts this week (he works for the power company in Kansas) we had to pull the plug on this week’s livestream. The plan is to do the Boba Fett retrospective next week (since we didn’t have anything else planned).
Punk Lotto Pod did a new episode about the Black Flag album My War.
The only new album release that was on my radar this week was Monster Mirror by Hanover German’s Resolutions. It is a good album. Very pleasant to the ear I thought.
Here are my top 10 listened to artists this week:
This week’s comic book pull list consisted of 3 books:
Fall of the House of X #5
Superior Spider-Man #7
X-Men ‘97 #3
I read Deadly Class Vol 1 (Reagan Youth) by Rick Remender. I started re-reading I Hate Fairyland Book One by Skottie Young but wound up putting that down temporarily because I got the itch to re-read the Dark Phoenix saga. I finished that and started reading God Loves Man Kills. I will eventually get back to re-reading I Hate Fairyland.
Speaking of X-Men, I wrote up a little post on Future of the Force about the From the Ashes relaunch starting up this summer. You can check that out here.
Last Friday evening, the campaign Accursed Queen of the Iron Bridge with the D&D group (Red 5 Tavern) that I play with wrapped up.
A new campaign will be starting up in a month or so. Most of the characters will be returning for this campaign but I opted to create a new character. Mostly because I was not really having any fun with the dark elf assassin.
Monday evening the new Star Wars campaign kicked off at DM Daves. It was fun. We all started with new characters. He is an umbaran gunslinger. In this campaign, the characters are working for the Pykes and currently searching for a bounty hunter that stole something from the Pykes. Have I mentioned how much I love the Star Wars RPG? It is so much fun. Course, you have to like Star Wars to like this game.
The wife and I finished up Young Sheldon this week. Man, those last few episodes were emotional. I didn’t watch any new movies in the theater this week but on Tuesday evening, I did go to the theater and re-watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
I ate at a new burger place this week. Now full disclosure, my wife says that I have eaten at this place before but I think she might be thinking of someone else that ate there with her because I don’t remember ever eating at this particular restaurant and I usually don’t forget food. It was good. I was told by the wife to order a double because their patties are thin. However, maybe she is thinking of another place that we’ve eaten because the patties were NOT thin and I should have gotten a single because that burger was huge and messy. Good. But messy. I will go back but I will only get the single. Plus, I will not get their fries because I did not like their fries. If you know me, however, you know that there are only a handful of places where I will eat french fries. Generally speaking, I don’t like the fries at most restaurants but when I visit a new place, I will order fries to find out if it is a new place where I will like them. This place was not. Here is a picture of the burger I ate.
This actually wasn’t the only new place that I ate this week. Last night, for the child’s graduation dinner, we went to a place that we had never been to. It is a fairly well known place (I think) but for some reason, we never bothered to go. I didn’t take any photos of my food but I had a philly cheesesteak and some fries. These fries were better than the fries at the burger place but, if we return to this restaurant, I will not bother. They were just fine. The philly cheesesteak was pretty good. I wasn’t a fan of their green peppers though. I just pulled them off. I liked the meat to cheese to onions ratio on this sandwich. Generally speaking, I do like green peppers on my philly cheesesteak but something about the way they were cooked here wasn’t to my liking.
This week’s track of the week comes from Chicago-based band Footballhead. They released a single earlier this week. Here it is:
That’s it for this week folks. See you again next week. Have a great weekend and remember to Be More Kind!!
