Happy Friday readers!
Wow! I can’t believe another week has come and gone. This one went by quick. Not that I’m complaining. I’m ready for the weekend. I don’t really have much to say this week. No other progress has been made on the office. I did clean off the loveseat to give the cats more room to sit when they come in my office during the day. They seem to be spending more time in here during the day. So I had a bunch of stuff just sitting on the loveseat. Now, it’s all sitting in a box that is on floor. It’s my, I need to get to this stuff and figure out what to do with it box.
Since I don’t have anything else to talk about this week, maybe I’ll just talk about where I come from and random stuff about me. Like an origin story. LOL!
I was a military brat growing up. I also spent some time in the military myself. I was born outside of Denver, Colorado in a town called Aurora. We didn’t stay there long at all after I was born. Shortly after I was born, my dad got transferred to Germany. After that, we moved around a lot. I went to high school in Oklahoma and did a little bit of college there before I dropped out and joined the military. I did a lot of moving around during my stint. Texas, Alaska, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Florida, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Mississippi are some of the places I got shuffled around to. I left the Air Force because they wanted me to stay in Alaska for another 4 years so I opted to get out. After the military, I should have gone back to school but I wasn’t making good decisions then so I moved around a bit and eventually wound up in the Seattle area where I met and married my first wife and had 3 kids. Shortly after the youngest was born, my wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, the disease eventually took her life. I stayed in Seattle for a little while and then wound up moving to Oklahoma where my parents were still living. It was here that I met my current wife. She somehow convinced me to finally go back to college and finish my degree. As you know (if you’ve been regularly reading this thing), we moved to Michigan and then back to Oklahoma. During all of that, somewhere around 2005 I think, I started writing a blog (also called The Otter Limits) which eventually also led me to writing for various online music publications. The big ones that I wrote for were PunkNews.Org and The Dying Scene and now I’m writing for Bad Copy. I also wrote for a couple of online news publications, writing political op-eds and stuff like that. The one that I was with the longest was called Red Dirt Report. It was around 2012 ish that I dipped my feet into podcasting. I started out as a fairly regular guest on a political podcast called Finding Common Ground. That led to me starting my own podcast (also called The Otter Limits) that mixed politics and music and pop culture and also started the wrestling podcast Around the Ring with my friend Dave and my wife. The Otter Limits started getting much more political and I wound up starting a new politics only podcast called Liberty Unfiltered. At some point I quit doing that one and started The Otter Limits up again as a pop culture podcast. After doing an episode in 2019 about an upcoming TV show called The Mandalorian with a friend, we decided to start a Star Wars podcast together that we called Rogue One Radio. So I’m still doing that (obviously). A while back I started up a music podcast with a former bandmate of mine called Radio Unfriendly. Technically, it’s still active but on hiatus. I haven’t gotten around to doing another episode in a while. I will eventually.
Oh! Bandmate. There’s another thing I haven’t mentioned. I started my first punk rock band my senior year of high school and I’ve been playing in bands ever since. The ones that were around the longest were ABF, Otisburg, and Get Fired. I started out in bands playing either guitar or bass but for the past several years I have just been singing. I need to get another band going. I’ve been slowly but surely working on getting something together since I got back in Oklahoma. Nothing solid yet but I’ll probably mention it in a future issue of this newsletter once I get it going.
Yeah, so all of that was pretty damn random and incredibly long winded (not to mention location and time jumping all over the place) but here I am now. That’s enough of that.
Rogue One Radio
This week’s episode, to no surprise, we discussed the new episode of The Mandalorian. We had a chat about what we liked, what we had issues with, where we thought the rest of the season is going and played tunes from The Dahmers, Chroma, and Venomous Concept. You can catch the replay of the live stream here:
Or, if audio is more up your alley, catch it on Spotify here:
Or, at our other audio platforms by going to bio.link/rogueoneradio.
We also launched another one of our patron exclusive episodes. I sat with Spencer from the Dingus Den and we talked about Ghost Rider #1. You can check out that patron exclusive episode (if you are a patron that is) at this link. And if you would like to listen but you aren’t a patron, now is a great time to jump on the bandwagon and become one! You can join for as little as $1 a month!
Shazam: Fury of the Gods - It was okay. My expectations were low so I wasn’t disappointed. It was a fun movie but for a person that is a huge fan of the Captain Marvel (Yes I said it. His name is Captain Marvel!) character, it was just okay. I like the actor playing the role but I’m not overwhelmed by the story and the writing in these movies. Again, fun movie but not the greatest iteration of the character in my opinion. The 2nd after credit scene was cool.
Outlaw King - I watched this one Netflix earlier in the week. It’s a 2018 movie starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce and covers his rebellion against England in a quest for Scottish independence. It was a good story (being a huge history nerd) but I wasn’t drawn in my Pine’s portrayal of the character. I liked the Angus Macfadyen portrayal in Braveheart better.
After talking with Spencer about issue #1 of the current Ghost Rider run, I decided to start reading more of that run so I read the first volume, Unchained. I also wanted to read some Shazam so I read the first 4 issues of the 2022 Tim Sheridan run Hell and Back.
I have also started trying to get caught up on the current Daredevil series by Chip Zdarsky. It is only up 8 issues right with the #9 coming out next week so I might be able to get caught up by then. I did finish the first volume (The Red Fist Saga last night) so I’m well on my way. I wrote a little review of that volume on Goodreads. You can read that here.
This week’s new comics for me included:
Superman #2
Joe Fixit #3
She Hulk #11
Batman One Bad Day: Ra’s Al Ghul
I Hate Fairyland #1 - This one isn’t actually a new issue. It came out in November. It is the first issue of a “revival” of a Skottie Young series. I saw it on the shelf and decided to give it a try. I remember liking what I had read of the original series so why not. It’s pretty good. I might try catching up on this current run (it’s only 5 issue into it).
New Jersey’s The Bouncing Souls released a new album today so I find it only fitting to include one of the tracks from that new album for this week’s track of the week. It’s a good tune with a good message (in my opinion). Go check it out.
That’s it for this week kids. Make you sure you go out and have a great weekend and remember to BE MORE KIND!
