General Shenanigans and Gas Station Pizza
Issue #19: Insert cool subtitle here
Welcome back for some more utter randomness that I call The Otter Limits!
I’m still getting settled in here in Michigan but so far, I’m enjoying the new locale. Our house is a little small and cramped but it is only temporary until we find a large enough piece of land to build our forever home on. There is a lot of potential in the area.
This weekend, I travel to the Chicago area to attend this year’s Scarif Con. Scarif Con is a Star Wars convention that is held every year in July and hosted by the Red 5 Podcast Network. I’ve never been but I’m really looking forward to hanging out with other Star Wars nerds for the weekend. I’m also looking forward to being in Chicago again. Good food. Good people. Good times. In the next newsletter, I’ll probably be reporting on the events of this weekend.
In the Oklahoma City area there is this free newspaper called Oklahoma Gazette. It covers local news, food, politics, and music. I was hoping that there was something like that up here and the other day I came across one. The big difference is that is doesn’t really cover news and politics. It is mostly geared toward entertainment. Still, it is pretty close. It is called Revue.
Wife and I had dinner at another local place called The Station Grill. It is located in Muskegon. It’s a retro kind of place that used to be a gas station in the 1940s. It is mostly a burger place but has other things like wings, nachos, burritos, and salads. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and the wife had a burger called the Olivette that had some sort of olive dressing on it. Both of our sandwiches are good. I, of course, had the onion rings as a side. They were okay. I’ve had better. Overall, it is a decent little place to check out if you’re in the area.
We also tried out a new (new to me of course) breakfast place but it wasn’t terribly impressive. In fact, sadly, every “breakfast” restaurant I’ve been to since I’ve moved here hasn’t really impressed me that much. There are still plenty of places to try though so I’m not giving up hope on finding a good one.
Also, the pizza up here is really good. So far, including Mr Scribs (which I had multiple times on visits up here), I have had pizza at 4 different places. The day I pulled into the residence, I had pizza from a place called The Northside Pub. A few days ago, we returns to the Red Rooster Tavern (which I talked about in my Welcome to Pure Michigan issue) and I had pizza there. And the day after that, we all decided to order out for pizza for dinner and while the children all ate Lil Ceasars (not a fan) the adults ordered pizza from a gas station. I found it very surprising that pizza from a gas station could be good. There is a chain of gas stations up here called Wesco and not only do they make pizza but some (not all) of their locations have grills where they make grinders, chicken wings, and other small finger food type things.
Pizza from a gas station. Never would have imagined. It really is a lot better than it sounds. However, of the four different pizza locations I’ve tried so far, I’d have to say my favorites are Mr Scribs and Northside Pub.
Rogue One Radio
This week, DJ, Nicole, and I were joined by a sorted cast of characters for some general shenanigans. We talked about the upcoming Parsec Fan Awards, this weekend’s Scarif Con in Chicago, Red 5 Gaming adventures, and the Red Dungeons and Dragons club, The Red 5 Tavern. We also played some great tunes from The Flatliners and The Slow Death. Check out the episode on YouTube here:
Here is this week’s pull list. It is all Star Wars. This week it was Darth Vader #25, Star Wars #25, and Han Solo & Chewbacca #4. I’m also still working on that Lost Ronin graphic novel that I mentioned in last week’s issue.
This week’s track comes from Adam Darowski. He recently put out a 2-sided single titled Dobie & Heavy. This song is the “A” side of the single. You can check it out on Bandcamp here:
